Valley County Search and Rescue (VCSAR) is a volunteer organization
dedicated to assisting those in distress within Valley County, Idaho.
Operating under the direction of the Valley County Sheriff,
VCSAR is composed of trained community volunteers who provide vital
search, rescue, and emergency aid services for both residents and
visitors. Our mission is to search, rescue, and assist those in need,
ensuring the safety of all who explore and enjoy Valley County’s rugged
and beautiful landscapes. Our team is prepared to respond to a variety
of emergency situations across the region’s diverse terrain. VCSAR also
actively supports community events and collaborates with neighboring
counties and other SAR units to enhance public safety throughout the area.
Valley County is a recreational haven, covering over 3,700 square miles
of stunning wilderness with towering mountains, abundant wildlife, and a
significant portion of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness—a
vast roadless area that draws adventurers from around the world. Our
high-elevation county has over 500 miles of snowmobile trails, and
countless opportunities for hunting, fishing, and outdoor exploration.
The rugged terrain, unpredictable weather, and remote locations create
unique challenges for search and rescue operations. Our team members are
prepared to meet these demands through comprehensive training,
mentorship, and hands-on experience. We operate year-round, from the
scorching summer heat in the canyons to sub-zero winter conditions in
the mountains. Equipped with a range of tools—from hiking boots to ATVs,
snowshoes to snowmobiles—our volunteers have an array of skills,
including radio communication, navigation, and clue detection, to locate and assist those in need. Often, simply reaching
the search area can be a test of endurance and expertise.
The
rewards of helping our community make every effort worthwhile.
